renaming /boot to /boot_<arch>
Whreky whr...@aol.comonnow rec games computer ultima dragons What happens if you REName the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files and reboot (I usually call them *.XXX, so they stand out)? Win95/98 are not supposed to need these files to run properly (and in fact, my WIN98SE system has neither at the moment),

Renaming NT boot partition
I restored my old registry & config files to the new install, and was able to boot up, so my initial problem wasn't with those files. Through trial and error (like adding paths to autoexec.bat) I was able to boot to my initial installation, after renaming the new windows dir, and reverting the old one).

Unique question......
When I rename that file and do a mkboot, the resulting floppy won't boot. I get about 7 lines of dots. After this the light of the floppy stays on and nothing happens. However when I select Build Bootrom, and treat the bootrom* file with mkboot etc, the floppy WILL boot. Is the process so, that I have to create a

dual boot by mistake - can I just rename the drives?
I can't rename my current C drive because Disk Management won't let me do it. If I name my new SATA drive to a lower drive letter will I be able to get XP Pro to do a clean install on it and boot from it? Is my best bet just to disconnect the current C drive? I'd love it if there were a slick way to do this from

Question...
System.map is right like it names tells you a map of the system; system parameters passed to the kernel at boot time. Everytime you install a new kernel you should copy the /usr/src/linux/System.map into /boot, best way of doing this without causing havoc is to rename it with the same version number as your kernel:

WINDOWS '95
Does that make sense or will the BIOS rename them exactly the same in both? Or am I asking for trouble by unhooking any drives at all, just should leave them all in place and install XP in the un-partitioned space? Thanks very much for any insight as this is my first dual boot with loads of drives on-board!

Multiboot question
None of us knew if it was possible to interrupt the normal boot process and somehow rename the file. The problem was finally resolved by using RLogin from another Sparc to rename the file. In winders 2k: 1) pop your winders 2k CD in the cup holder 2) start->run-><foo>:\bootdisk\makeboot a: where <foo> is your CDROM drive letter You can then boot from that floppy. I like to reinstall winders from time to time this way. I'll boot to the floppy, and rename C:\windows to something else and immediately

T2 Beginner question: config.h vs. Project files
Whether
you're actually still running that software or not is open to question, given the error message. Rather than deleting, I just rename questionable files like this. The problem is when WININIT.EXE can't finish processing WININIT.INI (due, I would assume, I had presumed it was something inherent in the windows boot process and wouldn't be left up to individual installers to muck up.

Newby : Duel Boot question
Forgive this beginner's question, but among the good advice I was given in a previous entry (which had to do with the possible shortage of memory in my system), I was told: "Just rename config.sys and autoexec.bat and reboot.
